Kids Football Jersey Buying Guide: Sizes, Kits and Gifts

Kids sizes are labeled by height in centimeters: most commonly 116, 128, 140, 152 and 164 cm. Age labels (e.g. 8-9 years) are only a rough guide, because children of the same age can differ by as much as 15 cm in height.

• Height 111-120 cm: size 116 (roughly 5-6 years).
• Height 121-132 cm: size 128 (roughly 7-8 years).
• Height 133-146 cm: size 140 (roughly 9-10 years).
• Height 147-158 cm: size 152 (roughly 11-12 years).
• Height 159-170 cm: size 164, and above that an adult size S.

A growing child gains 5-8 cm of height per year, so a jersey bought to exact measurements often becomes short after a single season. If the child is near the upper limit of their size, take the next one up.

On the other hand, skipping two sizes is a bad idea: a knee-length jersey gets in the way when running, sleeves fall past the elbows, and the child simply will not wear it. One size of growing room is the sweet spot that covers a full season.

A kids jersey does not sit on a shelf. It goes to training, to school, to birthday parties and onto concrete pitches. That is why polyester is the right choice: it dries fast, needs no ironing, and handles frequent 30-degree washes without the colors fading.

With kids jerseys, pay attention to printed crests and sponsors: quality printing stays flat after 20-30 washes, while poor printing starts peeling within a few months. Always wash the jersey inside out and avoid the tumble dryer.

Kids jerseys are most often sold as kits with shorts, and that is almost always the better buy: the child gets a complete outfit for training or matchday in one go, and the kit looks exactly like the real team gear.

For colder months the kit is easy to extend: a kids jacket over the jersey for the trip to training and a kids long sleeve training suit for autumn and winter cover the whole year.

A jersey with the child's name and favorite number on the back is a gift they remember. You can print the name of their idol or, even better, the child's own name, turning the jersey into their personal national team shirt.
